Four magical decades; They say life begins at 40. We’re not so sure because there has been a lot of life to enjoy in the forty years spanning the period of bikes we love here at SCM, namely the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. The average number of years riding experience of SCM people is also 40 years (though some of us are not wearing as well as the bikes we love!). So what attracts us to the bikes we stock? Well, like most bikers, we just love seeing classic bikes in great condition out on the road. Of course, there is no definition of ‘classic’ is there? To us, a classic bike is one which is desirable and a pleasure to see still around, whether exotic or not. Put simply, you know a classic when you see it. Some of those are now becoming unaffordable to most of us so part of what we do is search out what we firmly believe will be future classics as well as current ones. This is why we don’t confine ourselves to one particular period. However, we do confine ourselves to low mileage well cared for examples which we carefully check and prepare. Which brings us to the question of how we know a bike is both low mileage and cared for.
Mileages and Conditions
One of the first things which makes a bike desirable is a low mileage. Bikes can be cleaned, repaired, restored and looked after but a high mileage is still a high mileage and that affects it forever. As many of our customers are buying bikes to keep for the longer term, we only sell low mileage examples. Of course, there are no guarantees about the accuracy of mileages and we can’t hand on heart say that any mileage is 100% accurate any more than any other seller of bikes can. However, we can share with you just how much trouble we take to check the accuracy of mileages. Naturally we check the MOT histories and the mileage at each annual testing. We check the paperwork, service histories and we can usually speak to the owner of the bike before we buy it (many have been with the same owner for many years). Nice owners tend to have nice bikes in our experience.
